Christopher Nolan’s final part of his Dark Knight trilogy hits cinemas across the UK today and will no doubt own the big screens this weekend, so I thought it an appropriate time to take a look at a book that traces the origins of characters such as Batman and Superman all the way back to their beginnings as good old, humble comic books.

DC Comics – The 75th Anniversary Poster Book follows the same format of Gig Posters and Presidential Campaign Posters and includes 100 pull-out posters that each represent a seminal moment in DC Comics history. From their absolute beginnings of New Fun #1 and the world’s most sought after comic book, Action Comics #1 (the one that introduced Superman to the world), all of DC’s most popular characters are included with artwork from Jack Kirby, Berni Wrightson, Darwyn Cooke, Brain Bolland, Alex Ross and many more; each nicely reproduced from the original covers and in large format.

Comic book and Science-Fiction writer Robert Schnakenberg gives commentary on each piece and welcome insight on such peculiar offerings as Mr. District Attorney,  a cover in which our hero exclaims, “Don’t judge this man until you hear why I defended the Monkey Man!”

I’ve liked all of Quirk’s poster format books so far. It’s the perfect format to show off iconic images that can actually be pretty important to an individual, and it works particularly well with comic art. One of these covers might have been the one to get you started on a lifetime of comic book obsession. I know it includes a couple of my all-time favourites and it’s great to see them printed at double the size, with the opportunity to rip them out, guilt free and put them on my wall.
